At roughly 12,000 years old, the Niagara is a pretty young river in North America. Prior to the formation of the river, glaciers eroded the Niagara Escarpment. The river flies over a cliff, causing Niagara Falls. It’s the second-largest fall, behind only Victoria Falls in southern Africa.

The outflow from the Great Lakes goes to the Niagara River and over the falls, which is roughly 168,00 CUBIC METERS OF WATER every minute. Once it reaches the bottom of the falls, the water travels roughly 15 miles over gorges until reaching Lake Ontario.

What are some other cool facts about the Falls?

  • Many fish travel over the falls and can survive because they flow with the water.
  • The Falls creates hydropower that’s used heavily in both New York and Ontario.
  • The infamous green color of the Niagara River is from dissolved slats and rock flour (limestone),
  • The Falls are eroding still at a rate of about 1 foot per year.
